I wanted to put this somewhere in this book, because it matters: the point was never to smile with empty vanity. It's to smile with something real underneath it, something wholesome and true. That's real nobility, in my eyes. I've started calling it a universal smile—a smile that moves past ordinary happiness, past pain, past suffering itself, past the tension of uncertainty, into something trained, something chosen, smiling with purpose, love, understanding, integrity, and dignity all at once.
